About Grant County WashingtonEstablished in February of 1909, Grant County is named after President Ulysses S. Grant. Our main industry during the territorial days of the 1850s was stock raising. But by the 1880s, agricultural production had begun to take over. Numerous towns were planted and people streamed into the county. Fertile soil and abundant sources of surface and ground water promoted the development of fruit orchards. The PUD of Grant County owns two hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River, Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams, which helps to provide Grant County with one of the lowest per kilowatt hour cost for electricity in the nation. Columbia Basin Irrigation Project is the nation's largest single reclamation project. The irrigation system currently serves more than 550,000 acres and about 6,000 farms. Grant County Washington is bordered by Douglas County on the north, Lincoln County and Adams County on the east, Benton County on the south and Kittitas County on the west.
